Welcome to Macintosh Programmer's Toolbox Assistant!
What's on This CD?
• This Read Me file with last-minute information that was not available at the time this pamphlet was printed.
• The Macintosh Programmer's Toolbox Assistant (Toolbox Assistant) databases. There are two folders of databases. One contains the complete Inside Macintosh reference database. The other folder contains the same information, but the databases are subdivided by topic, as follows:
Macintosh Toolbox
Operating System
Text and Imaging
Devices
Multimedia
Networking and Communication
AOCE
QuickDraw GX
Power PC
Routines A…Z and Managers
Each database contains reference materials from one or more Inside Macintosh books. For example, the Macintosh Toolbox database contains the reference material from Inside Macintosh: Macintosh Toolbox Essentials and Inside Macintosh: More Macintosh Toolbox.
The database Routines A…Z and Managers contains a complete listing of all the routines and managers in the other databases.
Installing QuickView and Toolbox Assistant
To install the QuickView application and Toolbox Assistant, simply copy QuickView and one or more databases to your local hard drive. You may wish to load the one complete database for speed and convenience, or only those smaller databases that are pertinent to your project. If you do not have space for all of the Toolbox Assistant databases that you need, copy the ones you use most frequently and create an alias to the remaining ones on the CD.
IMPORTANT - Do not mix the single database version of Toolbox Assistant with the multi-file versions. This will cause unexpected behavior in the hyperlinks.
Using Toolbox Assistant
Toolbox Assistant gives you rapid access to up-to-date information about the Macintosh API. It provides a complete reference to the managers documented in Inside Macintosh, including their data structures, routines, constants, and resources.
QuickView gives you extensive hypertext links for rapid, easy navigation and provides useful features such as copy text, fast full-text search, user annotations, and resizable windows.
If you have questions on how to use QuickView and the Toolbox Assistant databases, please use the QuickView Help file. It is available through the Help menu when QuickView is active.

Last Minute Additions
Launching The Toolbox Assistant in multiple database mode.
When launching the multi-file version of Toolbox Assistant, be sure to launch the application by double-clicking on the QuickView™ application file or by double-clicking on the “Routines A…Z and Mgr.qv” file.
Printing from Toolbox Assistant
When printing Toolbox Assistant files, we recommend the use of the LaserWriter 8.x drivers. This will ensure that there is no clipping of the text at the boundaries of the page.
Loading the Proper Help
When using the multi-file version of Toolbox Assistant, be sure and copy the "Toolbox Assistant Help MULTI.qv" file to the same folder. When using the single-file version of Toolbox Assistant, be sure and copy the "Toolbox Assistant Help.qv" file to the same folder.
